The Woodlawn Campus of the University of Chicago Charter School (UCW) opened in September 2006. It has a three-part mission: 1) to assist students in developing the habits of mind, work, and heart to be successful in college and good citizens of their community; 2) to contribute to the community through student research, service, and leadership; and 3) to improve teaching and learning by serving as a site of professional development for teachers school leaders. Woodlawn High School educates students in grades 9-12. 

 

Position Summary:

 

Full-time, salaried teaching position responsible for preparing students, regardless of tested ability, for success in college. Responsibilities include a 30/70 role split between teaching and instructional leadership and coaching. Teaching expectations include analyzing and using formative assessment data to improve instruction, designing curriculum and assessments using the learning standards of the University of Chicago Charter School, participating in and leading professional development activities; and enabling students to contribute to the community through the creation of new knowledge. 

 

Further job responsibilities include: 

  • Supporting the planning and execution of curriculum for Special Education and Humanities along with scope and sequence. 
  • Plans for and teaches special education courses (30% of the role)
  • Serves as instructional coach to humanities teachers (70% of the role), engaging them in instructional coaching cycles (including lesson plan feedback and guidance, observation feedback and guidance, and debrief cycles)
  • Serves as a model classroom for other teachers
  • Has proven results in terms of assessment data and overall classroom performance
  • Serves on the Instructional Leadership Team (70% of the role) 
  • Leads professional development (as applicable)
  • Support high school leadership with planning and preparation for high stakes assessments (i.e. ACT, SAT, PSAT, ISA, diagnostics, final exams)

 

Position Qualifications: 

 

Masters Degree and at least 5 years of experience in education required. In addition, an Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) is required. Endorsements in high school content areas are strongly preferred. 

 

Qualified applicants will be an excellent teacher with proven experience enabling urban student to meet high expectations; reflective and receptive to providing and receiving professional feedback, video-taping and coaching; collaborative, collegial, goal-oriented, mission-driven, accountable, responsible, self-managed, and self-motivated and have excellent written and oral communication skills.
