The Woodlawn Campus of the University of Chicago Charter School (UCW) opened in September 2006. It has a three-part mission: 1) to assist students in developing the habits of mind, work, and heart to be successful in college and good citizens of their community; 2) to contribute to the community through student research, service, and leadership; and 3) to improve teaching and learning by serving as a site of professional development for teachers school leaders. Woodlawn High School educates students in grades 9-12.
Position Summary:
Full-time, salaried, post-secondary counseling position responsible for preparing students, regardless of tested ability, for success in college. The Post-Secondary Coach has the overall responsibility for guiding students and parents through the successful transition to post-secondary education by establishing and maintaining successful relationships with students as well as colleges and universities across the country, being an active member of professional organizations, and having extraordinary interpersonal and organizational skills.
Roles and Responsibilities include:
1. Lead workshops for students and families that focus on various aspects of the college admission and transition process
2. Maintain and support a caseload of seniors to ensure their post-secondary success
3. Lead and support CGO events, initiatives, and communication cadences (college tours, college fairs, college acceptance
ceremonies, mock interviews, etc)
4. Write letters of recommendation for the graduating class and advise faculty in their writing
of recommendations
5. Analyze standardized test scores and make suggestions to improve them annually
6. Collaborate with School Counselor(s) to ensure student success and graduation
7. Establish and maintain ongoing relationships with college admissions officers
8. Host college admissions representative on campus in the fall and spring
9. Plan and coordinate regular informational meetings for families on topics related to the
college application process
10. Represent UChicago Charter School in professional associations and community meetings
11. Take advantage of opportunities to regularly visit college campuses and attend important
conferences
12. In collaboration with the culture & climate team you will support student centered school-wide initiatives and programs
Position Qualifications:
- 3-5 years of college admissions and/or post-secondary advising experience
- Master's and/or Counseling degree preferred
- Prior college counseling experience on either the college or secondary school side required; experience with both preferred
- Demonstrated counseling skills beyond college admissions extending to the context of family dynamics
- A willingness to learn and counsel in the context of the unique culture of UChicago Charter
- Proven knowledge base of working with urban student body as well as U.S. colleges/universities, and the ability to reasonably predict college admissions decisions, knowledge of liberal arts colleges is a plus
- Strong communication/marketing, interpersonal, organizational, and decision-making skills
